Fauziah “Gee” Hj. Yahaya

Fauziah Hj. Yahaya — known in the art world simply as Gee — has spent more than thirty years turning batik, Malaysia's most beloved textile tradition, into contemporary fine art. Born in 1965, she works in batik on canvas and paper as well as mixed media, carrying the wax-and-dye discipline of the craft into gallery painting.

Her signature subjects are drawn from the world around her: Heliconia and Malaysian tropical flora, cats, elephants — and the Petronas Twin Towers, rendered in the flowing line that only batik allows.

A certified art educator since 1993, Gee formerly practised at Galeri Rafflesia in Kompleks Kraf on Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur, and has demonstrated live batik painting to international audiences.
